CPAP Machine, treating Sleep Apnea

CPAP machines are devices used to treat sleep apnea. The CPAP (continuous positive air pressure) machine provides consistent levels of air pressure and must be prescribed by a doctor.

What is a CPAP machine?
Sleep apnea causes those affected to experience obstructed airways while asleep. The throat closes leading to pauses in breathing in the night. CPAP machines push air gently into the airways to prevent the throat from becoming blocked. The machine is worn over the the mouth and nose at night while sleeping. CPAP machines are designed to adjust the level of air pressure to the breath the patients take. The CPAP machine automatically adjusts the delivered pressure to the minimum necessary to keep airways open and unblocked. It has been reported that sleep apnea patients who use a CPAP machine not only get restful sleep but the risk of strokes and heart attacks are lowered. Some CPAP machines come with such features as humidifiers, flexible chin straps, and automatic altitude adjustments.

Using a CPAP machine
• Before using the CPAP machine, wash and dry your face to ensure a proper seal of the mask.
• Place the CPAP machine on a level surface that is lower than your bed, such as next to the bed.
• Place the CPAP headgear over your mouth and nose tightly. Make sure the CPAP mask is not too tight as this can cause bruising.
• Attach the swivel tube and hose to the connection on the mask.
• Turn on the CPAP machine and make sure the airflow is steady. Tighten the mask if air is leaking.
• When you are done using the CPAP machine make sure to wash the mask with soap and warm water. Lie on a clean towel and allow to air dry. If you have a CPAP Pillow also adjust it according to your preference.

Adjusting to a CPAP machine
• It may take time to adjust to using the CPAP machine, and here are some tips to follow.
• Wear the mask in small increments during the day so you can become more comfortable with the CPAP machine.
