What is a CPAP Pillow?

Monday, October 26th, 2009

There is now a pillow available that is designed especially for people who suffer from sleep apnea and use a CPAP device. The American Sleep Apnea Associated has defined CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure) therapy as the treatment most common for sleep apnea.

The standard pillow most people use does not accommodate most CPAP users. The success of a CPAP mostly depends on the proper use of the CPAP machine and the wear of the mask, so it is very important to have a mask that is able to stay in place all night. If air happens to leak, it can distrupt treatment and the condition could worsen. To be able to avoid this, you need to have a stable platform while you are sleeping that has enough space for neede equipment and also provide support for the spine and upper body. A CPAP pillow provides this type of platform.

There are some CPAP pillows that have hallowed out spaces that support and protect all types of gear. Other types of pillows are more flexible in that they can be adjusted for comfort and give the spaced needed. Sometimes different pillows have to be tried before finding the perfect one, but for most users this type of specialty pillow provides the comfort and support that a standard pillow cannot provide.

Whether you tend to sleep on your back or on your side, the CPAP pillow offers the same benefits of neck support pillows. The CPAP pillow’s contoured shape is designed to be able to support your neck and head to properly align the spine and aid in relieving pressure points. The high quality of foam of the pillow is very soft, but at the same time holds its shape preventing any edge collapsing. The CPAP pillow improves comfort while sleeping and can be used with all brands and styles of masks.

For those users who have Medicare, the pillow mask is covered by insurance plans but the CPAP pillow is not. Private insurance carriers may cover the cost of the pill, but coverage will vary with each carrier. Insurance carriers should be contacted about these types of medical supplies to see if they are covered under plans.
